XC® COMPOSITE ELEMENTS FOR MOOSBRUNN PRIMARY SCHOOL

Bei der Modernisierung, Sanierung und Erweiterung der Volksschule wurde eine zukunftsfitte Bauweise gewählt. The focus was on using the most sensible building material in the right place: basement made of concrete (MABA Fertigteilindustrie from the Kirchdorfer Group), suspended ceilings and roof made of wood-concrete composite elements (XC® living from MMK Holz-Beton-Fertigteile) and walls made of pure cross-laminated timber (MMcrosslam from Mayr-Melnhof Holz).

Over 750m² of double wall elements and element ceilings made of solid concrete and almost 670m² of XC®living from the Kirchdorfer Group were used. The wood-concrete composite elements are particularly suitable for projects where the challenge of sound insulation and span width is great and a visible wooden surface is also desired. The XC® composite element is manufactured by MMK, a joint venture between the Kirchdorfer Group and Mayr-Melnhof Holz.

The prefabricated XC elements enable assembly without the need for a base and without in-situ concrete, which reduced the construction time to just under 11 months. “In addition to the ecological aspect, building physics is one of the challenges in any school building. With our solutions, we were able to reconcile span, sound insulation and construction time,” says Sebastian Knoflach, Managing Director of MMK.

Together with the regional partner Kreiseder Holzbau GmbH, the aim was to “use the best products where they make the most sense”, says spokeswoman Sonja Hiebler-Liebminger from Mayr-Melnhof Holz AG. “Over 200 m³ of MMcrosslam installed in Moosbrunn stores more than 200 tons of carbon of the climate-damaging greenhouse gas CO2.”

The building is considered a showpiece in the region, and XC® wood-concrete composite already received the Innovation Award for Architecture+Construction in 2019 as an award-winning product for its wide range of applications and functional quality.
