NOISE BARRIERS AS A SOLAR POWER PLANT
November 2022
The Kirchdorfer Group is expanding its product range: the PHONOBLOC® wood-concrete noise barriers, which have been awarded the natureplus® seal of approval, are being fitted with photovoltaic panels. Kirchdorfer is thus opening a new chapter in the greening of Austria’s traffic route infrastructure.
The solar power generated by this product is expected to offset the total amount of energy used to manufacture, transport and install the “noise barrier power plant” after just two years of operation.
With the installation of PV panels (glass-foil) on the upper Y-shaped element, an annual yield of 1,173 kWh/kWp can be expected at a utilization rate of 90%, whereby 1 kWp is equivalent to a generator area of approx. 4.85 m². This corresponds to an annual CO2 saving*) of 325.4 kg/kWp.
„In order to make optimum use of the existing noise protection infrastructure, we also make it possible to retrofit existing noise barriers with our power plant noise barrier. With a specially designed Y-shaped element, which is used instead of the uppermost noise barrier element, and an appropriately adjustable substructure, we can optimally align the photovoltaic panels against the sun and at the same time protect them against the wind and snow loads to be expected at the respective location.“ as Klaus Aichholzer, KCS Head of Road Business Unit, explains.
With the installation of PHONOBLOC® wood-concrete noise barriers, the Kirchdorfer Concrete Solutions division is one of the leading providers in the expansion of infrastructure along roads and railways. Thanks to the new development of a Y-shaped element, existing noise barriers can also be retrofitted for the installation of PV panels “on top” by simply replacing the uppermost standard noise barrier element.
