CLIMATE-FRIENDLY TRANSPORT DIRECTLY FROM THE FACTORY – KATZENBERGER RELIES ON RAIL
September 2022
The Tyrolean precast concrete parts manufacturer Katzenberger relies on sustainable logistics by rail for exporting segments to Switzerland and saves 4,100 truck journeys.
Katzenberger Fertigteilindustrie GmbH, a company of the Kirchdorf-based Concrete Solutions division, has been supplying segments for the renovation of the Kerenzerberg highway tunnel in Filzbach, Canton Glarus, Switzerland, since the beginning of 2021. The prefabricated concrete elements will be used as outer shells for reinforcement in tunnel construction. The major order will be completed by the end of 2022.
The segments are loaded directly onto the rail at the Wiesing branch’s own siding using a gantry crane. Every week, a train with 20 loaded wagons is dispatched to Switzerland. With a total order volume of 60,000 tons, the train transport saves a total of around 4,100 truck journeys (including empty runs).
“Environmentally friendly transport, preferably from a single source, was key for us right from the start,” says Katzenberger’s Managing Director Stefan Kizlink. As a long-standing logistics partner, the ÖBB Rail Cargo Group was commissioned with the complete solution. RCG Sales Director Gottfried Eymer confirms: “The ÖBB Rail Cargo Group’s expertise is being put to perfect use in this major project. This end-to-end logistics solution for transporting the segments from Tyrol to Switzerland is exemplary.“
Ein eigener Bahnanschluss am Werk zählt mittlerweile zu den entscheidenden Bieterkriterien, nicht nur im „Bahnland Schweiz“. However, the potential for sustainable logistics is not yet exhausted with the rail connection from the storage area. “The delivery of essential raw materials should also be transferred to rail in the future,” says Kizlink.
